• To shove aside the true husband, and embrace the adulterers of his spouse;

• To appoint taskmasters that he never authorized over his house, Eph. 4:11;

• To introduce a ceremonious, pompous, outward show of worship, drawn from Pagan, Judaical, and Anti-Christian observations, of which there is not one little word or iota in the whole book of God.

Those who hold communion with Christ are therefore careful to admit nothing and practice nothing in the worship of God, whether private or public, unless they have his warrant for it. Unless it comes in his name, with “Thus says the Lord Jesus,” they will not hear an “angel from heaven.” (Gal. 1:8). They know that the apostles themselves were to teach the saints only what Christ commanded them, Matt. 28:20. Not long ago, many thousands in this very nation left their native soil and went to a vast and howling wilderness in the farthest reaches of the world [America]. They did so to keep their souls undefiled and chaste to their dear Lord Jesus in this matter of his worship and institutions.

(2.) Positively, to keep their hearts chaste to him in his ordinances, institutions, and worship, they readily embrace, receive, and practice everything that the Lord Christ does appoint. They diligently inquire into his mind and will so that they may know what those things are. They go to him for directions, and beg him to lead them in the way that they have not known (Jn. 14:5). The 119th Psalm may be a pattern for this. How the good, holy soul breathes after instruction in the ways and ordinances, the statutes and judgments, of God! They are sensitive to whatever is of Christ. They willingly submit to it, accept it, and give themselves up to its constant practice. They refuse whatever comes from anything else.
